Hon. John B. Scherling (Ret.) Joins JAMS in San Diego

Judge Scherling joins JAMS with four decades of experience litigating and adjudicating cases in both state and federal courts. From 2016 to 2025, Judge Scherling served on the San Diego Superior Court, where he presided over probate and family law matters, developing a well-rounded approach to cases involving families, estates and emotionally charged disputes. As a settlement conference judge, he successfully facilitated resolution of cases involving intentional interference with expected inheritance, breach of fiduciary duty, financial elder abuse and emotional distress claims, among other matters. Before his tenure on the court, he worked as a partner at Sughrue Mion from 2005 to 2015 and as of counsel at Hahn & Adema from 2005 to 2007. Based in the San Diego Resolution Center , Judge Scherling will serve as a mediator, handling estate, probate and trust; family law; federal law; intellectual property; and personal injury matters. He previously served as an assistant United States attorney for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in San Diego from 1990 to 2005. He also clerked for the Hon. Judith N.
