Hon. John B. Scherling (Ret.) Joins JAMS in San Diego
San Diego – JAMS, the largest private provider of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) services worldwide, is pleased to announce Hon. John B. Scherling (Ret.) has joined its panel. Judge Scherling joins JAMS with four decades of experience litigating and adjudicating cases in both state and federal courts.
From 2016 to 2025, Judge Scherling served on the San Diego Superior Court, where he presided over probate and family law matters, developing a well-rounded approach to cases involving families, estates and emotionally charged disputes. As a settlement conference judge, he successfully facilitated resolution of cases involving intentional interference with expected inheritance, breach of fiduciary duty, financial elder abuse and emotional distress claims, among other matters. Before his tenure on the court, he worked as a partner at Sughrue Mion from 2005 to 2015 and as of counsel at Hahn & Adema from 2005 to 2007.
Based in the San Diego Resolution Center , Judge Scherling will serve as a mediator, handling estate, probate and trust; family law; federal law; intellectual property; and personal injury matters. He is available to conduct sessions in person, as well as virtually, for clients across the country and internationally.

While a litigator, Judge Scherling handled a wide range of complex civil cases—including patent infringement, product liability, professional malpractice, government liability and personal injury. He previously served as an assistant United States attorney for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in San Diego from 1990 to 2005. He also clerked for the Hon. Judith N. Keep from 1985 to 1986.

Judge Scherling earned his B.S., with honors and distinction, from Iowa State University of Science and Technology and his J.D., Order of the Coif, from Vanderbilt University School of Law.
